I’m not a culinary expert, just a home cook with time on her hands (fully retired, at last). Not wanting to sit idly, I started this site and one on gardening, Diary of an Average Gardener to keep some of that spare time occupied with my two favorite activities…cooking and gardening. I welcome advice on either and if you have a favorite family recipe or gardening tip, feel free to share. I’ll publish it with full credit going to you.

The page that follows includes the most recent posts that I’ve added to the site. Explore and Enjoy!

Creamy Asparagus Soup

Yes, more soup. It's great for what ails you on those cold winter days. Cream of asparagus soup is made rich with good chicken stock, milk and cream, a little butter, some Gruyere cheese, and of course FRESH asparagus. I know, many of you don't like asparagus. If you're basing your dislike of asparagus on [...]

Black Bean Soup

I really enjoy bean soups and one of my husband's favorites is Black Bean Soup. Thick, creamy with a little kick and chunks of ham on top is always a crowd pleaser in this house. There are at least a dozen recipes for black bean soup on Food Network alone and low and behold.....mine is [...]

Chili Sauce

Chili sauce is sweet, tangy, and can have a little heat if you like.  Mother didn't add the heat factor, but I do. So the recipe that follows has some added hot peppers that you can add.....or not. For the most part, this is the recipe that was published by The Ball Brothers Company (the [...]

juicy grilled pork tenderloin

Fall, with the crisp air, blue skies,  cooler temperatures,  equals a spectacular time for grilling.  Grilled pork tenderloins and a side of spiced apples is the perfect combination for a cool fall evening. Pork tenderloins usually are packaged two to a package. You can buy them already seasoned, but what's the fun in that! You [...]

Grilled Lamb Chops

grilled lamb chops

Lamb roasted, stewed, in a shepherd's pie are all tasty dishes, but my favorite way to serve lamb is thick, juicy grilled lamb chops. In case you haven't guessed yet, I am not a vegan or a vegetarian. (Although, we frequently make a meal of vegies.) Therefore, I have no problem in telling you how [...]

Lemon Butter Chicken

chicken in creamy lemon sauce

Lemon Butter Chicken, a tasty enhancement to parmesan crusted chicken, boasts a rich lemony flavor, both in the chicken and the sauce. I use the left overs from the parmesan crusted chicken as I always make more than we could possible eat in one meal, just so I have some left over. I use a significant [...]

Parmesan Crusted Chicken

parmesan crusted chicken

I've heard of this recipe before. However, I made this recipe up myself before this dish (and it's many applications) was popular (about 20 years ago). This is my son's (Matt to me, Creig to his friends) favorite dish. I make it for him whenever he can make it home which isn't as often [...]
