Turkey Burgers with Black Beans

– Posted in: Poultry & Fish

Turkey is a great way to get the feel of a burger without the fat. I know you make think that it will take like ground up Thanksgiving dinner, but I assure you it doesn’t.  With a little help from black beans and lots of spices and herbs, you may even like them better than a hamburger…..well maybe.  But here’s a secret….go ahead and have that regular ground beef burger once in a while, but try substituting turkey and have a burger any time.

Here’s how I make ground turkey into a really great tasting burger.

Ingredients for Black Bean Turkey Burgers

1 lb of ground turkey
1/4 cup chopped green onion
1/2 cup black beans (cooked or canned) If canned rinse first. Use more if you really like black beans.
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tsp salt (or not)
1 tsp good Mexican chili powder or chipotle powder if you want it spicier.
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder (you can use more if you like)
1 tsp black pepper

Mix together and let sit in refrigerator for at least 1/2 hour. Form into patties and grill. Since there’s so little fat in these turkey burgers, you should spray your grill with a cooking spray first.  If you pan fry, just spray the pan with a little cooking spray to keep them from sticking. Cook thoroughly. There you have it, turkey burgers with a little Mexican flare.

I serve with lettuce, tomato, etc. on whole grain buns. If you want cheese, make it a low fat variety.  For sides, a salad, cole slaw, a baked sweet potato, roasted potatoes and root vegetables, or quinoa. Take your pick!  For dessert, strawberries or other fresh fruit on top of angel food cake.  (Angel food cake doesn’t have any fat, but it does have LOTS of sugar, so just take a small piece.)
